An excursion to Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir

Any trip to Kashmir cannot be completed without having an excursion to Gulmarg, some can even opt for a longer stay in Gulmarg to enjoy its beauty. Originally called ‘Gaurimarg’ by shepherds, Gulmarg was a favourite haunt of Emperor Jehangir who once collected 21 different varieties of flowers from here and the place its present name. Gulmarg lies in a cup shaped valley in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, around 56 kms from Srinagar.
On the way to Gulmarg from Srinagar
The journey to Gulmarg is half the enchantment of reaching there – roads bordered by rigid avenues of poplar give over to flat expanses of rice fields interspersed with picturesque villages. Depending on the season, nature’s colours could be the translucent green of spring, summer’s rich emerald, or autumn’s golden hues, when scarlet chillies festoon windows of village homes. After Tangmarg, the climb to Gulmarg begins through fir-covered hillsides. At one point, known simply as View Point, travellers generally stop their vehicles for a few minutes and look out a spectacle of snow-covered mountains, almost within touching distance. Make sure you spend only few minutes, there is much more to see so keep moving. During spring, a rolling meadow dotted with countless colourful Bluebells, Daisies, Forget Me Not’s and Buttercups can be seen making the place true to its name - Meadow of flowers.
As I visited Gulmarg towards the end of winters, my entire experience and this blog will be snow-capped. One can rent coats & gamboots during winters from the the shops at the foothill of the mountains. Don't forget to buy sunglasses and gloves for as less as Rs.100-150 as one would surely need them.
Gulmarg also has the highest green golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 m, and is the country’s premier ski resort in the winter. When in Gulmarg, you should try skiing so time your visit well. Pocket yourself with some munching and chocolates so to keep yourself fit with enough oxygen and to stay active. You will have many people selling candies so if you haven't purchased then help the localities in their earnings by buying from them. It is always good to munch on something as you go higher in altitude. Every single person in Kashmir is earning for a living so do bargain but do remember its their source of earning and negative highlights in the media refrain people from choosing it as a regular tourist spot.
Gondola ride to Phase 1
The waiting area for tourist for their turn
 Let me start my ride
Shepard houses
The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the highest in the world - there are 2 phases and if the weather condition allows, head to Phase 2 first which is the top most view point. Every phase would take most of your time and the beauty will make sure that your time flies. One must also try Skiing in Gulmarg which will be one good experience as it is rated Asia's seventh best ski resort. people from all over the world head to Gulmarg to ski and practice for their sport. Just before my visit, Jonty Rhodes and Amit Sadh were spotted skiing in Gulmarg.
The view from Phase 1
And in the freezing temperature, some hot spicy soupy noodles can be enjoyed at Phase 1. get ready for a long walk with your feets dunked in snow. People can also have fun on a sleigh ride. Many Bollywood films have been shot in Gulmarg including Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani but it was shown as Manali.
The ride to Phase 2
The ride for skier
I spent most of my time at Phase 2 as the view was gorgeous and I could only see snow as far as I could see. Numerous clicks and having fun with snow took most of our time. Carry some power banks as you will run short of battery while clicking pics. Pics can never capture the beauty your eyes can capture. So take a moment and just soak in the mountains and feel the moment. It was biting-cold but every moment was worth it and just sitting by myself with snow all around, I could hear my breath and was completely mesmerised with the beauty our country has to offer.
Surreal view from Phase 2
There are many hotels in Gulmarg so people can opt for a 2 or 3 days stay to enjoy the place thoroughly and its activities along with a surreal view. On my day visit, Thomas Cook India made sure we have the best meal and we walked a long way to Hotel Rosewood for some amazing lunch. The walk was worth every morsel. The food was good, rich and delish. One of the best meals I have had in Kashmir and the view while you eat is heavenly. If there is an elderly person who cannot walk much then there are cab drivers who can drop you to the nearest point to the hotel you want to visit. Through out my journey, the people from Thomas Cook - Medha, Pankaj and Balesh had so much to tell about the place and its beauty that I was envious of them.
Lunch with a view
During my visit and after I had many queries coming in, all had one main question - SECURITY. Well, during my entire stay in Kashmir, I did not feel unsafe or scared. But I would always suggest to go to Kashmir or Gulmarg via a tour package as they know a lot about the place and the people. Having a local with you always helps. So don't let fear take away one journey which will remain in you forever. Thomas Cook India has many Kashmir packages and most of them cover Gulmarg. Opt for a good package and to my advice stay back for a night or 2 in Gulmarg to be completely soaked in its beauty and enjoy every single thing it has to offer. Some places just make you fall in love and Kashmir is surely one such place. There is nothing to fear about, something happening at a far distance doesn't mean entire Kashmir isn't worth visiting. Let us show that love is beyond any hatred or fear. I am heading here again as I'm yet to experience the different views that Gulmarg has to offer and also I missed skiing, and I am not to be blamed, the beauty soaked me in completely that I refuse to step down from Phase 2 ;) It is our land, visit it with pride, not fear :)

Paradise offers Zafrani Biryani Festival which one shouldn't miss

Paradise, the 'World's Favourite Biryani' introduces the exotic Zafrani Biryani Festival till 31st March 2017. The on-going festival is available in all outlets across Bengaluru (Indiranagar, Kormangala, New BEL Road, J.P Nagar, Electronic City, Whitefield).
The Paradise 'Zafrani Biryani Festival' is an effort to present, revive and re-introduce to the die-hard Biryani lovers a rare and much loved cuisine of the Nawabs and their guests. The Zafrani Biryani is available in two variants – Chicken and Mutton.
The Zafrani Biryani thrived on a very secret ingredient and the recipe of which was held only within the confines of the royal Mughal family. A dish that was a regular in the royal kitchens and for their guests was out of reach for the then common man. Zafran or Saffron - a very expensive ingredient that made all the difference in creating that certain zing of a taste and flavour and aroma.
All our methods to prepare and serve the Zafrani Biryani have been planned down to the minutest of details. They identified and sourced each of the ingredients for them to blend so as to give the best flavor and aroma. The 'secret' ingredient, the saffron, has been sourced specially for this festival and yet we have priced our variants at very affordable pricing to ensure that each Biryani lover is able to taste our special offering.
Vijay Anand Bakshi, Corporate Chef, Paradise explained us the source and the preparation method of the biryani which was impressive. My favorite has to be Double Masala Mutton Biryani. For those who enjoy Paradise single masala biryani should opt for single masala but people like me who enjoys masaledaar biryani should surely opt for double masala or else they will find the biryani tad bit bland.
The Zafrani Biryani Festival is on during lunch and dinner time at all their Dine-in Restaurants and Takeaways and also through their delivery partners – Swiggy, Food Panda and Zomato. The pricing for the dishes in BANGALORE is listed below:

The all new Irish Menu Madness is live at The Irish House

If you are around VR Bengaluru then you have to make a pit stop at The Irish House. It is not a typical pub or bar, but it motivates people to come in groups and spend time, more like community building. And if the food is good then why wouldn't anyone want to stop by.

Situated at Level 3 of VR Mall, it has a Full Bar Available along with Outdoor Seating, Wifi, Live Sports Screening & Smoking Area too (though I would recommend you to quit smoking now). The interiors were done well and its catchy, I personally loved the interiors.
They have changed their menu for some freshness and introduced many new dishes so I took this opportunity to try it out. Get ready for some Irish Menu Madness.

I am in love with spicy mocktails so at a glance of Spiced Guava Mary, I ordered it. It had pepper instead of chillies which did not suit to my taste of a spicy mocktail where as Tangerine Mojito was refreshing from the afternoon heat.

For appetisers, Belfast glazed chicken wings was served where you can opt for the glaze of your choice out of honey chili, honey bbq and hickory bbq. I relished these good chicken wings with honey chilli sauce :) The next starter was brilliant. Smoked Duck Pita Pockets were very tasty and messy to eat which had spinach pita pockets filled with orange glazed smoked duck, creamy ranch, tasted peanuts topped with shredded carrots.

Next came The Sourdough Fondue Bowl whcih looked very appetising. Spicy grilled chicken bites, smoked chicken sausages, chargrilled broccoli and roasted sweet potatoes were served in a platter with sourdough bread bowl filled with cheese sauce.

For main course, I opted for Tenderloin bowl which had tenderloin served with cracked wheat and honey glazed carrots. The meat was very tender and juicy and the combination of tenderloin with cracked wheat was the highlight of the meal. This was my favorite dish from my meal. Next. I was in a mood to have some pizza's so I went for Sriracha Chicken Pizza which had Chicken Bolognese with sriracha drizzle.

While munching of main course, I opted for Green Appletini and Peach iced-tea. Green appletini was my favorite mocktail which had green apple extract, orange juice, pineapple juice along with fresh lime served in a martini glass.

No meal is complete without a dessert so I chose Nutty Caramel Pie. Gooey caramel and peanut butter pie layered with rich chocolate ganache is delicious and when served with warm caramel sauce, it can take you to another planet. Beware, it is a very filling dessert. I am not much of a peanut butter fan but I liked this dessert. For my next visit, I have Dual Chocolate Torte in my mind for a chocolate fan like me :)

So when you are around Mahadevpura, head to VR Mall and go straight to Level 3 to enjoy this menu madness.
